Italian Rococo Era Painter, 1696-1770 Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was born in Venice on March 5, 1696. His father, who was part owner of a ship, died when Tiepolo was scarcely a year old, but the family was left in comfortable circumstances. As a youth, he was apprenticed to Gregorio Lazzarini, a mediocre but fashionable painter known for his elaborately theatrical, rather grandiose compositions. Tiepolo soon evolved a more spirited style of his own. By the time he was 20, he had exhibited his work independently, and won plaudits, at an exhibition held at the church of S. Rocco. The next year he became a member of the Fraglia, or painters guild. In 1719 he married Cecilia Guardi, whose brother Francesco was to become famous as a painter of the Venetian scene. They had nine children, among them Giovanni Domenico and Lorenzo Baldassare, who were also painters. In the 1720s Tiepolo carried out many large-scale commissions on the northern Italian mainland. Of these the most important is the cycle of Old Testament scenes done for the patriarch of Aquileia, Daniele Dolfin, in the new Archbishop Palace at Udine. 1882-1955,French painter, sculptor and writer. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Avignon with Pierre Grivolas (1824-1905). After moving to Paris in 1899 he attended Fernand Cormon's atelier in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and William-Adolphe Bouguereau's studio in the Acad?mie Julian. He also studied at the Acad?mie Carriere, where he met Matisse, Jean Puy, Andre Derain and Pierre Laprade. While family responsibilities from 1901 and military service in World War I sharply curtailed much of his early output, he nonetheless produced noteworthy paintings and sculptures from 1907, the first year he exhibited at the Paris Salon, to 1913, when he exhibited at the Armory Show in New York.
Andrea Previtali
Italian Early Renaissance Painter, ca.1470-1528,was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active mainly in Bergamo. He was a pupil of the painter Giovanni Bellini. In Bergamo, he painted a John the Baptist preaching with other saints (1515) for the church of Santo Spirito; a San Benedetto and other saints for the Cathedral of Bergamo, and a Deposition from the Cross for Sant Andrea.
